Many of us grew up playing some form of the game "Capture
the Flag." At our church the youth have a tradition of playing
one form they call sock wars.
The main part of our church is an entryway and sanctuary which are flanked
by wings on each side--a perfect war arrangement with a side to defend,
a side to attack, and a middle ground to battle in.
The weapons are rolled up socks, the object is to capture the other teams
flag from their home base and return it to your home base before they do
the same to you, and the fun and challenge of it all is it must be done
in a pitch dark church that has all outside light sealed out.
Problem number 1 in this game is honesty. People must admit to being hit
and take their five minutes of time-out with good humor or it is impossible
to have fun.
Problem number 2 is the frequency of eggs on the head if people go too
fast the run into walls or furniture.
Problem number 3 is getting the kids to quit playing. I say kids lightly.
Many 30-40 year old kids have been caught having fun at this too.
Sock wars can be a game at church, a game at home, or a game in the gym
at school. It´s simple and addictingly fun. It may not help you get
in shape but it will make your heart pound. Give it a shot.
