Flashlight Football
|
|
Because we can play softball without lights at 10:00
P.M. during North Dakota summers means we can't finish supper during
late fall and winter without dining room illumination. That limits
outdoor activities after the evening meal unless we have a light
source.
Since late fall football can be a blast on cool October and November nights,
we need a gimmick and a gimmick we have. It's flashlight football.
To play flashlight football require the usual football stuff and two, preferrably
rubber coated and tough, flashlights. Each team gets a flashlight to use
on each play as they see fit. For example, the light person might illuminate
the long bomb so the receiver can follow the ball into the hands and over
the goal line. The defense may want to follow the ball period so as not
to get faked out on a reverse or Statue of Libert for is to purposely blind
an opponent by shining it directly into the eyes. That penalty is loss
of battery for one whole series.
Tricky offensive guys illuminate the sky while the quarterback tucks the
ball and runs for darkness. Defenses like to wiggle the flashlight as fast
as possible to create the illusion of an old time movie which throws off
any offensive timing one thought possible. Imaginations run wild when the
lights are involved.
So, if it gets dark before the game begins in your part of the world, join
us in trying flashlight football. You may never play during the day again.
Shine on.
