Stopwatch Golf!

|
|
Track season is in full swing, and in North
Dakota that means lots of bus time. Since our closest
out-of-town meet is two hours away, the mind tends to
wander and is always on the lookout for new travel-time
entertainment. As we neared our destination during a
recent track excursion, I spied four stopwatches in a
nearby bag. It wasn't long until three of us were challenging
each other to stop the watch exactly on the one second
mark in the fewest number of tries. Soon our competitive
nature took over, not only to win our initial challenge,
but to improve our game. A whole lot of hot air and little
bit of creativity later, we produced a pretty fun little
travel distraction we've dubbed "Stopwatch Golf".
In "Stopwatch Golf", each participant gets one shot to stop his/her watch
closest to a par one second, a par four equates to two seconds, and the
longer par five means three seconds. Our game is played "skins-style",
meaning the closest to the time (high or low doesn't matter) wins the hole.
A tie means no one gets the hole, but the hole is carried over to make
the next effort worth two skins!
We modeled our inaugural game after our local public course and played
the layout accordingly. The first hole is a par four, meaning two seconds
was the time to shoot for on our opening "shot". After the front nine,
our "golfing" trio was tied at three skins apiece. Our front nine took
about ten minutes and we had the whole front of the bus howling.
Next time you've got a little "time on your hands", give our game a try.
It's harder than you might think, and made for a lot of fun. Sometimes
the simplest things are the best!
