Golfing Matilda

|
|
As golf season dawns on the prairie, ushered in
early by the favor of El Nino, I , a true duffer (someone who
actually tries to get better but can't) am tempted to pick
up a few golf mags and read up on how to correct my numerous
shortcomings. This spring, however, I won't fall prey. I won't
spend a dime on advice. I may not even invest in a bucket of
balls. I'm going to do my own thing instead....I'm going to
waltz.
I thought about this last summer. After preaching a sermon on the rhythm
of life and the need to include the Sabbath in that rhythm, I realized
that my horrendous golf game was being caused by a "two left feet" syndrome.
I was off beat. Then, I figured that I needed a strategy to get my swing
into a consistent rhythm that I could practice doing with every repetition.
I came up with the waltz. Back-two-three-swing-two-three.
Now, with every backyard and va Man, I can almost hear the music as the
Blue Danube flows by. I am soothed and relaxed with a beautiful seven iron
in my arms. That ball is flying further and straighter than it has ever
flown off the end of my irons, and I haven't watched one video or read
one article yet. I'm a waltzing fool and loving it.
Have I found the answer this time? Could it be that I might write the next
advice article in Golf Digest? I don't know. I haven't golfed a hole yet.
I haven't had to make a putt either, and I'm not sure I can waltz with
that breaker of hearts. But I am pulling out my Austrian record collection,
and the music is seeping into the innermost chambers of my brain planting
that indelible rhythm--one-two-three-one-two-three.
In a few short months, I could be showing off my much improved game or
dancing alone. I don't know. The jury is out. Whatever the outcome, I'll
say, with Frank Sinatra, "I did it my way" and it will at least be as good
as anything I've tried before.
