Water Boomerball

Before summer gets away on us, there is a game you ought to try at the beach, the lake, or the sandbar--water boomerball.

First, let's gain an understanding of boomerball. It's a softball-like game played with a softball-sized wiffleball and a big fat red bat. The only unusual rule is that the team up to bat provides the pitcher and each hitter only gets one pitch to hit. A foul ball, a whiff, or a no swing are all outs. Blame your woes on the pitcher, he/she is on your team and should be giving you a pitch to blast every time.

Now for the water part. Put homeplate and first base on shore. Second and third base are put in the water and are fashioned by tying down or weighing down flotation devices.

With these simple instructions, your group is ready to play water boomerball. You'll have a great time str "Going deep" with a good pitch is a literal phrase. Triples and homeruns are rare unless you're a competitive swimmer who can fly from second to third. And for the defense, force outs at third are your best bet. Hustle helps too; wiffleballs don't float forever, and outfielders, make sure you can tread water.

On a hot day, water boomerball is a refreshing change from other forms of softball. In fact, it is a "hit" every time. Go deep.
