A Fish Story
|
|
My friend Howard called me one evening and left
a message, "Call
before ten." Luckily, I got home at 9:50 and dialed him up. Lucky
because he had a story--a seven pound walleye story, a walleye caught
on a cold, dark mid-November night while tossing a silver and blue
Rapala into the frigid Missouri. Standing in snow, reeling in the
heavy mystery fish, sense of sight blackened but heightened touch
and sound. Pull, splash, pull, splash. Dragging the fish thru the
snow and ice to the light of the pick-up and scraping the ice off
to identify the markings of the "most wanted" walleye. What a story.
I recount this event for only one reason--to draw attention to the gift
my friend delivered at 9:50 on Monday night. He called to give me a story.
He did not call to brag or make me jealous. He called to take me moment
by mome with his two sons on the banks of the Missouri which delivered
up a surprise, a least expected thrill in windy, twenty degree blackness.
It may not have been as good as being there, but it was close, close because
I love stories and my friend knows it. I love them more than candy or steak
dinners or a new tie, all of which are perishable or easily lost. This
story will not be packed away or consumed. Just remembered--as a gift I
received--last night.
