Work Auction

Need a new idea for a fundraiser this year? How about auctioning off your kids (for a day, that is!) That's what our local church youth group (grades 7-12) did one spring and it worked out quite well. To prepare for the big auction, young people (alone or in pairs) wrote a clever verse or two about themselves, what they can do, etc. Here's a sample:
World class mowers are these girls
just check out our church lawn
but we'll work hard at anything
that you request upon!!

From bathrooms and babysitting
painting and planting
we'll even take some time
to drink lemonade & do some chatting

We love to be outside
but have fun no matter what we do
so check these two out
They just might be for you!!

After appropriate advertising of the event, the auction was held after a morning church service. A nice sampling of people from the congregation came out to check out the possibilities. In the end, several hundred dollars were raised to help some kids go to a youth retreat in Colorado. And Cars were washed, pea gravel was shoveled, items were painted, furniture was moved, homes were dusted, weeds were picked, and lots more. Work got done, kids helped others, and now some youth can have a great trip! It turned out to be win-win for everybody. Hard work does pay off!
