Let's Go Fly A Kite

One year, on the last Sunday of our Sunday School's spring quarter, we flew kites. They were decorated with pictures and symbols that reminded us of Jesus, and we did it to celebrate a quarter during which we learned about the person of Jesus. It was a fun event but somewhat unusual because we live in North Dakota and awoke to a calm Sunday morning, not great for flying kites.

We had about 85 kites to get up in the air and all wanted to do it at the same time if possible. At times a little wind would kick up. The finely engineered pocket kites we had purchased needed only a slight breeze so up they went. Cool sight. Then the wind would taper to nothing and down they floated until no kites dotted the air.

Soon however, despite little or no wind, several kites were staying up in the air. Was it a mir running--all over. We cut off traffic running across and down streets. We invaded neighborhoods and vacant lots. We did all we could to keep those kites up in the air, and it worked.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit is like the wind, blowing when and where it pleases. At times His Spirit fills us to overflowing and we fly so easily. But other times, the Spirit is strangely calm, almost not noticeable. Do we give up, roll in the string.....quit for awhile.....or do we run, doubling our efforts, tugging on the string to create flight even though we must work harder for it. Easy answer.......we run.

God doesn't need our extra efforts as much as He values them. He blesses those who grab the string and run.
