| Good things happen when young people do things
with adults. Worthwhile projects and activities are great,
and we need to do more of these. But don't count out the
value of something done for just plain fun -- like a good
old softball
game.
Teachers and coaches have known for years about the
rewards of working with young people. Our church as a whole
has discovered
these same rewards the past couple of years. It is simply
amazing what you learn about others when you play with or
play against them. As you
watch others play, you get curious. "Who's that boy?" and "Who's
child is that?" and "What's that guy do for a living?" and "Did
you know he had an arm like that?" and "Boy, can she run!"
Such
questions and comments were the norm in both dugouts as
our old fogeys taught the young folks a lesson or two in
our
much-hyped battle. I must admit I learned more about several
people in
this silly game than a whole summer of morning worship
services and I'm sure it was the same for many others.
It's about getting "local" with our youth. Without even knowing it,
that's exactly what we did. We found out we have no Mark McGwires or
Sammy Sosas attending Immanuel, but that made no difference. Our game
was a big hit will all involved. Why don't you give something like it
a try? Go play, have fun, and learn about others. We've found the effort
is minimal but the rewards are great!
